We develop two algorithms for determining two inherent optical properties (IOPs) from radiometric measurements in vertically homogeneous waters. The first algorithm is for estimation of the ratio of the backscattering to absorption coefficients from measurements of only the vertically upward radiance and the downward planar irradiance at depths where the light field is in the asymptotic regime. In a book dedicated to the giant Pacific octopus, Cosgrove & McDaniel () summarised knowledge on the species's maximum size as follows: The specimen William Dall speared in at Iliuliuk had the largest radial span of any giant Pacific octopus ever measured. Jock MacLean's Port Hardy behemoth was the biggest ever weighed.

During the passage of a cold front in March , bio-optical properties examined in coastal waters impacted by the Mississippi River indicated that westward advective flows and increasing river discharge containing high concentrations of nonalgal particles contributed significantly to surface optical variability. A comparison of seasonal data from three cruises indicated spectral models of. Several factors make this an excellent textbook. The problems with solutions augment the pedagogical value of the book, as do the chapter summaries, the further reading at the end of each chapter, the extensive and comprehensive appendices, the biography, the list of symbols and the index." - Barry R. Masters, OPN Optics & Photonics News

Batch cultures of the cyanobacteria Synechococcus spp. (strains 48 Syn and ) and Porphyridium cruentum (Rhodophyta) were grown in nitrogen-limited (N:P=4:l) and phosphorus-limited (N:P=l) seawater media. Optical properties, including particle size (forward angle light scatter), particle granularity (right angle light scatter) and relative mean channel red (> nm) and green ( Author: Jerome Lynn Hall. species of 15 families of rare to moderately abundant mesopelagic fishes taken in the central Pacific. These exhibit a wide variety of patternsof vertical distribution and diel migration. Several undertake migrations similar in extent to those of most myctophids and migrating stomiatoids, while others remain atdepth both day and night.

Optical properties of several Pacific fishes. Churnside JH, McGillivary PA. Reflectivity and depolarization of six species of fishes were measured using blue and green light. In general, the fish were between 15% and 25% reflective.

But this is THE best book for Pacific Coast fishes. I'm not always fond of drawings, and as much as I love Humann's photo field guides, I haven't found a book that competes with this one.

The potential retrieval of water column structural information from oceanographic LIDAR profiles can be illustrated with some calculations based on a vertically homogeneous water column, the returned laser power (P r) decays logarithmically as a function of depthvarying optical properties along the path of the ng P t, τ a, τ s, AR and Ω FOV are constant for a LIDAR Cited by: 2.

The majority of the literature on ocean optics has concentrated, understandably, on the majority of the ocean. For most people, however, their nearest stretch of salt water is a shelf sea: water lying on a continental shelf and less than metres seas occupy (depending on definition) of the surface area of the world ocean but contain about of the world's phytoplankton biomass.

In situ campaigns for the collection of optical properties in New Caledonia coastal waters have been conducted since [40] [41][42]. In the South Western Tropical lagoon, a series of bio. These can provide quantitative profiles of the optical properties of the water column to depths of 20 to 30min productive coastal waters and to depths of m for a blue lidar in the open ocean.

The female guards, cleans and aera toeggs until they hatch in months. The focus is on the fauna of the eastern Pacific, especially the fishes of the California coast, a group among the most diverse and best studied of all marine ecosystems.

A generously illustrated and comprehensive source of information, this volume will also be an important launching pad for future research and will shed new light on the study Price: $ We studied the impact of aerosol distribution and optical properties on radiative transfer, based on climatological and more realistic near real-time aerosol data.

Sensitivity tests were carried out using the single-column version of the ALADIN-HIRLAM numerical weather prediction system, set up to use the HLRADIA simple broadband radiation scheme.

Lake Baikal is the oldest lake and largest freshwater reservoir in the world. As a result of its exceptionally long geological history, the lake has been a theatre of evolution and speciation of organisms, and it currently harbors more species than any other lake in the world.
